I'm not from Hawaii but as a Taiwanese American I wanted to try out the Taiwanese food here... I was super pleased!!!! I came here wanting just Taiwanese breakfast but I ordered the beef noodle soup and minced pork over rice along with the salty soy milk, chinese donut, and sticky rice roll.

Beef Noodz: Probs my favorite out of everything I ordered. I know the reviews said it wasn't spicy but if you add one of the chili sauces they have, I swear it's perfect  The soup was super flavorful and the noodles were not the super chewy kind but still delicious

Minced pork over rice: reallllyyy good flavor on the meat, this was my bf's favorite!! I just wished there was an egg and more meat to the rice ratio

Chinese donut: so good so good, perfect crispiness and softness. Probably one of the best places I've had in America for chinese donuts

Sticky rice roll: yummy!!!! this was the first thing to come out and I devoured it~ not the best due to lack of filling to the amount of rice but still hit the spot

Salty soy milk: mmm I loved this dish ever since I was a kid. This satisfied my craving!! Only complaint is that the pickled veggie thing was a little big and it didn't have the chili oil that is usually in it (but again one of their chili sauces is BOMB n u could just use that)

Overall, I loved this spot! So sad I'm not a local, I'd def come here often. Price was suuuuper good too, I ordered all that and it only came out to around $26 without tip!

Yahoo! I finally found Taiwanese food in Honolulu. Ok, maybe there are other places but this one was my favorite so far.

KC is in a funny location that I'd have never found without Yelp. Park in the back lot near Royal Kitchen and then walk PAST the side entrance to Royal Kitchen onto the pedestrian part of River Street and turn left. A few doors down and poof, you're in Taiwan.

The first sign you're not in the usual Chinese spot? The sound of Mandarin being spoken! Next sign? All the workers are crowded behind glass cases full of fan tuan sticky rice rolls. There's an enormous rice cooker and a big cauldron which smells like sweet pork and shaoxing wine. Yum!

The menu is long but is really just a handful of items prepared with different meats. Everyone seemed to have a plate of scallion pancakes on their table so of course I needed to as well. :)  Made to order and delicious.

And, the whole reason I was there was for the lu rou fan minced pork on rice. Served with a shoyu boiled egg for an extra dollar. The stewed pork was leaner than in Taiwan but just as tasty.

It's too bad more local people don't know about Taiwanese food. The ingredients, flavors, pickled veggies would all make so much sense here.

Service is quick, parking is free for 30 minutes, and the restaurant validates (though I'm not sure what that means for cost since I was in and out so quickly.) I'll be back for sure!

Still on the search for authentic Taiwanese food,  KC Kitchen seems to be a solid baseline. I remember passing by here as a kid on the way to Chinatown and the fact that it's still around today, wow does that say a lot! I never got a chance to try it because Royal Kitchen manapuas and dim sum always won me over but today that day has changed!

The interior looks as you would expect, kind of run down, messy and worthy of its location in Chinatown. The workers speak some English and are very friendly.

SALTY SOYMILK AND CHINESE DOUGHNUTS (YOUTIAO): tastes a lot better than it looks. It's essentially like rice porridge but using tofu instead, which gives it a crumbly but silky texture. Tastes really good when dunking the youtiao in

SMOKED DUCK NOODLES: the duck comes on the side. I enjoyed the unique salty smoked flavor but a little too much fat and skin and not enough meat. Broth is on the clearer/ lighter side.

SPICY GARLIC DUMPLINGS: good, would order again. Definitely has a bite from all the garlic they use

GREEN ONION PANCAKES: thin, oily and slightly chewy. Good for grabbing all the extra sauce from the dumplings

If you're willing to brave the crazy chronics and don't mind being leered at by the Chinese men gambling outside then KC Kitchen is a good place for you to try something new.

If you didn't know, I was born in Taiwan! The 3 ladies working here speak mandarin and Cantonese. I noticed most of the regulars are Cantonese. I came back to eat 3 times in a row recently and for good reason. Reminds me of the good old days when food is homemade. Yes it's not perfect but made with love. So affordable and delicious, won't break the bank!
I'll keep trying the menu so I can come back to say eat it all, haha rewind back 30 years ago my parents restaurant FuShing was only couple doors down from them! It's now turned into Royal Kitchen. I still remember when I used to help buss the tables and got quarter tip then run few more doors down for 5 cent candy. Oh childhood days, so innocent.

Love this place for its Taiwanese breakfast. I keep meaning to come back to try the other items on the menu but after one visit, I already have a favorite!
